15 Aug 2012, 13:46Growing In Summer Part 7 - Nutrient Solution

Your Hydroponic Nutrient Solution Temperature

The root zone should remain at between 18-21°C. Our Nutrient Thermometer is a vital tool for measuring the nutrient solution temperature.

With rising summer temperatures, this can be hard to achieve. You should attempt to keep the temperature of your nutrient solution below 25°C. Any hotter than this and the nutrient uptake and oxygen content of the water may be affected. If you have a nutrient tank you can try covering it with white/black/white sheeting to keep the heat out. To keep your oxygen content high you can use an air pump, and air stone. We now stock aeration kits which saves you a few pennies. These come in a range of sizes and can be found here.

14 Aug 2012, 13:51Growing In Summer Part 6 - Thrips

Thrips

Thrips can be hard to get rid of and are a pain in the hydroponicist's bottom!

Identification

Thrips are another common pest at this time of year. Here’s what they look like. Look out for slug-like trails on your plants, and black dots of thrips excrement.
If your plant is attacked by thrips, it will be using up valuable energy fighting the damage they cause that would be better spent on healthy growing.

How to deal with thrips?

Neem Repel will improve your plants’ defences against attack by thrips. We recommend Plant Vitality Plus or CannaCure if your plants are attacked by thrips. A Silicon product like Bud Link will also help in the defence against thrips by strengthening plant cell walls.

14 Aug 2012, 11:35Lumatek Digital Ballasts Still No 1 ballast

Lumatek Digital ballasts

Lumatek digital ballasts are the most advanced lighting solution for modern horticulturilsts and hydroponicists. Small, compact, and completely silent these E-Ballasts are able to deliver more lumens while using less electricity than standard magnetic compact ballasts. Since getting them back in store with the returns policy being resolved  they have proved more popular than before!

Unlike traditional ‘core and coil’ magnetic ballasts, Lumatek digital ballasts are microprocessor-controlled and able to evaluate and compensate for the actual state of lamp degradation and voltage fluctuations in power supply from your local grid. This means that Lumateks are able to provide a precise controlled output voltage to the lamp ensuring optimum PAR levels are achieved.

Lumatek products include Super Lumen and Multi-Watt Dimmable ranges. Sold in 250w, 400w, 600w and 1000w Sizes.

These are available from all the shops including the London branch. Side by side grows are going to be done in one of the grow shops for their hydroponic grow diary which can be found at the bottom of the website. Find out about minature roses and step into the world of chillies. Enjoy!
