11 Sep 2012, 14:30WHY VENTILATION IS VITAL IN HYDROPONICS GROWING
There are a number of factors that must be got right in order to get the best from your hydroponics grow. One vitally important aspect that is often overlooked by novice hydroponics growers is getting the grow room ventilation right. You can have the best hydroponics lighting system, the best plant nutrients and additives, a top-of-the-range automated hydroponics watering system…but if you have not got the grow room ventilation right, your plants will not thrive.
Adequate Grow Room ventilation will solve the following issues:
Air Exchange
Plants need Co2, which enables photosynthesis to occur, and the plants to create the necessary energy to grow. There is a small percentage of Co2 in air, and plants in the confined area of a hydroponics grow tent will soon use it up. Unless you ensure that sufficient fresh air is introduced to the grow room, your plants will struggle. Aim to have an air replacement rate of at least 20 times per hour in order to provide adequate Co2 for your plants.
Humidity Levels
If you do not have adequate ventilation in your hydroponics grow room, humidity levels can become a problem. This is particularly true during the flowering phase of the plants’ lives, when lower levels of humidity are required than in the vegetative phase. Aim for a Relative Humidity of about 60% in the vegetative stage, lowering it to about 40% in the flowering phase to avoid the possible onset of bud rot. Use a Digital Thermo Hygrometer to monitor temperature and humidity levels. Use extraction fans to remove hot, humid air from the grow room, and use an intake fan to introduce cooler, less humid air.
Heat
Ideally your hydroponics grow room will be kept at a temperature of between 24° and 27°. This should be a few degrees lower when the lights are off. HID hydroponics lighting gives out a lot of heat, and it is all too easy for the grow room temperature to grow too high for your plants to have optimum growing conditions. Use intake fans to bring cooler air into the grow environment. Air-Cooled hydroponics lighting systems such as the Icarus Air-Cooled Reflector will help keep down the heat created by Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium lights.
Pest Infestations
Pests such as fungus gnats and sciarid flies are attracted by lack of air movement. Keep the air moving in your hydroponics grow room using a fan such as a Wolfnado Clip-On Fan, and keep the air exchange in the grow room at optimum levels using intake and outtake fans.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT FANS FOR YOUR GROW ROOM
This can be tricky due to the fact that there are so many variables. Air temperature varies in the United Kingdom not just from season to season, but from day to day. Some growers choose fans based upon the cubic area of their grow room, others use the number of lights or the total wattage as the decisive factors. Smaller set-ups only require an extraction fan and rely on the negative pressure created inside the grow room to draw fresh air in passively. Where possible, we recommend incorporating an intake fan into your hydroponics set-up to ensure adequate supplies of fresh air. Another useful tip is to aim to over-spec on your hydroponics grow room ventilation requirements and use a fan-speed controller such as the SMS Twin Fan Speed Controller to regulate the fans according to the temperature.
