Privacy PolicyGrowing Media
All soil-less gardening systems use a media to anchor the roots, facilitate oxygenation and hold moisture/nutrients for the plant. The media itself is inert and contains no plant nutrients and will not harbour any soil borne pests or diseases. We offer a wide range of growing media that have been selected due to their high quality and superior capacity for holding.
Rockwool
Rockwool is made from rock which has been melted and spun into fibrous cubes and growing slabs, Rockwool provides roots with a good balance of water and oxygen. Small cubes are used for starting seeds and cuttings and then transplanted into larger cubes once rooted.
Cellmix is a rockwool granulate made up of tufts of water absorbent and water repellent rockwool which has excellent aeration and drainage properties and is a favourite of many growers in pots.
Rockwool slabs are most commonly used to grow larger plants in conjunction with aquatrays and drip feeding systems.
Clay Pebbles
Clay Pebbles are derived clay formed into pellets and then fired in rotary kilns at 1200°C. This causes the clay to expand inside and become porous. Clay Pebbles are light-weight, do not compact and can be cleaned and sterilised after use. They are also inert, pH neutral and contain no nutrients. As they drain freely they do not hold excessive water, so they provide good oxygen levels around the root zone.
Organic Soil
If you want to grow in soil then we stock a variety of good quality organic soils and mixes including excellent products by Biobizz, Canna and Plagron.
Coco Coir
Coco Coir growing medium is made from the refined husks of coconuts. It is very airy which allows lots of oxygen to be made available to your roots and increased growth rates.
Perlite
Perlite is a volcanic rock that has been superheated into very lightweight expanded glass pebbles. Perlite is often used to start seed and cuttings. Many use it in conjunction with vermiculite and it is also added to potting soil mixes to prevent soil compaction which will inhibit root growth.
Vermiculite
Vermiculite is another mineral that has been superheated until it has expanded into light pebbles. Vermiculite holds more water than perlite and has a natural 'wicking' property that can draw water and nutrients in a passive hydroponic system.
